Lewis Chessmen
In 1831, 78 chess pieces, among other things, were found on the shore of the Scottish island of Lewis.
The originals are mostly carved from walrus ivory and probably originate from Trondheim (Norway), dated 1150-1200 AD.
Most of the figures can be admired today at the British Museum in London, while the others are at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
A warrior sits on a small horse (presumably a Viking or Icelandic pony); on his right side he carries a spear and on his left side a shield.
The figure is a replica modeled after the original.
