Valkyrie, also known as battle maiden or shieldmaiden, from the retinue of the Allfather Odin (Wotan). The Valkyries escorted the Einherjar from the battlefield to Valhalla, to the Allfather, god of war and death Wotan (Odin).
The Valkyrie waits at a distance at the edge of the battlefield to escort the fallen heroes to Valhalla. Only those who die on the battlefield are chosen by the Valkyries. All others are awaited by the goddess Hel in the underworld after death.
Valkyria is the Old Norse word for Valkyries. Wal stands for "heap of slain" and kyria stands for "chooser". The warrior women are both Odin's helpers and his daughters. They fulfill the wishes of the Allfather, choose the warriors fallen in battle and bring them to him. The Valkyries can also intervene in battles and determine fate. The function of the Valkyries is thus similar to that of the three Norns. It is believed that the youngest Norn, Skuld, was also a Valkyrie.
The warrior women, like the Einherjar, live in Valhalla. Their abode in Valhalla is Wingolf, the Hall of Friendship.
In the Northern Lights, the Vikings saw a sign of the Valkyries' presence on Earth. Somewhere on Earth a great battle was fought, they believed. The moon reflected the golden armor of the Valkyries as they rode over the battlefield and selected the Einherjar. This is how the Northern Lights were conjured into the sky.
