Vegvísir (signpost) ring with "Viking compass", stainless steel, partially gold-plated
Vegvísir - Wayfinder - partially gold-plated stainless steel ring
The Vegvísir is a mystical magical symbol that was presumably intended to be - or represents - a "guide through life"!
There are various theories about the meaning and structure of the symbol.
The symbol is known from the Huld manuscript around 1880. An attribution to the Vikings is controversial and has not yet been proven.
The center of the eight-spoked symbol, which resembles a Hagal rune, stands for the "self".
Among other things, it is assumed that this could refer to the 9 worlds from Norse mythology:
- The Upper World: Asgard - Vanaheim - Ljósálfheimr
- The Middle World: Muspelheim - Midgard - Niflheim
- The Underworld: Svartálfaheimr - Jötunheimr - Hel
The Huld manuscript was written hundreds of years after the end of the Viking Age.
The manuscripts state: "If this sign is carried, one will never get lost in storms or bad weather, even if the way is not known."
The word "Vegvísir" comes from the Icelandic language and means wayfinder!
We do not find a clear source reference in the Huld manuscripts as to where the symbol originated, nor any attribution to the early Middle Ages (or possibly even earlier times).
It is also not clearly known whether it was used for navigation on, for example, ships.
We therefore deliberately remain vague here, as no verifiable evidence has yet been provided.
However, the magical aura, power and strength of the symbol are hardly to be denied!
