Vegvísir - Wayfinder - Stainless steel ring with runes.
The Vegvísir is a mystical magical symbol that was probably intended to be - or represents - a "guide through life"!
There are various theories about the meaning and structure of the symbol.
The symbol is known from the Huld manuscript from around 1880. An attribution to the Vikings is controversial and has not yet been proven.
The center of the eight-spoked symbol, which resembles a Hagal rune, stands for the "self".
It is also assumed that it could represent the 9 worlds from Norse mythology:
- The Upper World: Asgard - Vanaheim - Ljósálfheimr
- The Middle World: Muspelheim - Midgard - Niflheim
- The Underworld: Svartálfaheimr - Jötunheimr - Hel
The Huld manuscript was written hundreds of years after the end of the Viking Age.
It says in the manuscripts: "If this sign is carried, one will never get lost in storms or bad weather, even if the way is not known."
The word "Vegvísir" comes from the Icelandic language and means wayfinder!
We do not find a clear source reference for the origin of the symbol in the Huld manuscripts, nor any attribution to the early Middle Ages (or possibly even earlier times).
It is also not clearly known whether it was used for navigation on, for example, ships.
We therefore deliberately refrain from making definitive statements here, as no verifiable evidence has yet been provided.
However, the magical aura, power, and strength of the symbol can hardly be denied!
