Vegvísir - Waymarker, stainless steel jewelry pendant.
The Vegvísir is a mystical, magical symbol that was presumably intended to be a "guide through life" - or at least portrayed as such!
There are various theories about the meaning and structure of the symbol.
The symbol is known from the Huld Manuscript from around 1880. Its attribution to the Vikings is disputed and has not yet been proven.
The center of the eight-spoked symbol, which resembles a Hagal rune, represents the "I".
It is suspected, among other things, that these could be the 9 worlds from Norse mythology:
- The Upper World: Asgard - Vanaheim - Lichtalfheim
- The Middle World: Muspilheim - Midgard - Niflheim
- The Underworld: Svartalfheim - Jötunheim - Hel
The Huld manuscript was written hundreds of years after the end of the Viking Age.
The manuscripts state: "If this sign is worn, one will never get lost in storms or bad weather, even if the way is unknown."
The word "Vegvísir" comes from the Icelandic language and means signpost!
We cannot find a clear source reference in the Huld manuscripts as to where the symbol originates, nor any attribution to the early Middle Ages (or possibly even earlier times).
It is also not clearly known whether it was used for navigation on ships, for example.
We are therefore deliberately remaining silent on this matter, as no verifiable evidence has yet been provided.
The magical aura, power and strength of the symbol are, however, undeniable!
