Trilobite on host rock, petrified fossil

Trilobites (from Greek "three-lobed") were segmented animals that existed in the primeval oceans of planet Earth from the Cambrian period until the end of the Permian, approximately 250 million years ago.

They possessed a calcitic exoskeleton (especially the spine). They became extinct before dinosaurs conquered the Earth and are now index fossils for the Paleozoic Era.

Trilobites were among the first arthropods, a phylum of hard-shelled creatures with segmented bodies and many coordinated legs (which, along with the animals' antennae, unfortunately, are almost never preserved as fossils due to their composition). They form the extinct class Trilobita, consisting of nine currently recognized orders - over 150 families, over 5,000 genera, and more than 15,000 described species. New species are found and identified every year. Their diversity makes trilobites the most divergent group among all extinct organisms. Joachim Barrande made significant contributions to their early research.
