Among our ancestors, the oak enjoyed unrestricted protection as a sacred tree. In Norse mythology, the oak was dedicated to the god Thor.
The oak symbolizes steadfastness, love of freedom, pride, strength, power and glory, as the masculine aspect of the thunder god. In addition, the oak symbolizes our Indo-Germanic primordial mother, for it provided acorns as food for humans and animals.
The oak tree was considered particularly sacred as a "tree of the gods". Felling oak trees was severely punished and oak groves were therefore strictly protected.
