Jewelry - "Sun" pendant on lava stone
The "magical" (black) sun is first concretely attested in the Akkadian-Old Babylonian region (Sargon I, Naram-Sin). As BAB-CHOME, the invisible "dark sun" is considered the earthly source of power of the supreme deity "ILU," directly connected to the divine power emanating from the afterlife, which - in part - can be utilized by the gods and goddesses, especially Anu, Enlil, Ea, Ishtar, and Marduk. The close kinship of this pantheon with that of the Edda has been proven, although so far without a definitive explanation for this Mesopotamian-Germanic commonality.
One of the most famous and beautiful depictions of the "Black Sun," placed next to the "Sun of the Day," is found on the large Naram-Sin Stele preserved in the Louvre in Paris. The myth of the "Black Sun" traveled from Southern Babylonia to Assyria, Persia, Phoenicia, Carthage, and Egypt. Emperor Frederick II brought an Assyrian amulet with the "Black Sun" to Europe; and this is its first tangible appearance in Europe (which, however, says nothing about whether the "Black Sun" belief might not have been indigenous to us in earlier Germanic times (see Mesopotamian-Germanic commonality)).
