Saami leather bracelet, brown and silver, length 24 cm
Folk art - handcrafted items from Northern Scandinavia.
The indigenous people of northern Scandinavia are the Sami, also known as Lapps. They still live today in large parts of northern Scandinavia, including Sweden, Finland, and Norway, as well as in northern Russia. Besides their vital reindeer herding, they continue to craft these beautiful leather bracelets, preserving a significant part of their centuries-old folk art. During the Viking Age, the Sami frequently engaged in armed conflicts with the Vikings. Later, however, trade relations with the Norsemen flourished, facilitating the exchange of essential goods in the harsh northern regions.
We are delighted to offer you these beautiful leather bracelets, which have changed very little over the last 1000 years. This folk art is painstakingly handcrafted. The bracelets are made from soft goatskin, just as they were in the past, and then woven with refined brass wire. The brass wire has been plated with 9-karat gold. A button made of white cow bone is sewn onto the bracelet for fastening.
