The Viking ship Oseberg was discovered in Norway, near Oseberg in Vestfold, in 1903. The ship rested on a bed of blue clay and was covered with sod and a large quantity of stones. Oseberg was built in the second half of the 9th century and buried approximately 50 years later. The ship is about 50-100 years older than other known finds. It lay quite low in the water and must have been a relatively dangerous vessel when under sail.
