Replica of the Lewis Chess Set. The original chess pieces were discovered in 1831 on the Scottish Isle of Lewis and consist of 78 pieces in total, hence the name. The island belonged to Norway at the end of the 12th century. The pieces were likely made in Norway around 1150 and were crafted from ivory, walrus tusks, and whale teeth. Thanks to the Vikings' extensive trade, chess was introduced to Europe at an early stage. It is believed that a Norwegian trader hid the pieces on the island. The majority of the original pieces are on display at the British Museum.
