The Dragon in the World of Myths and Legends
Western dragons differ significantly from their Eastern counterparts. Legends from European countries portray dragons as giant winged, fire-breathing creatures, mostly feared by humans. Many stories, myths, and legends tell of men fighting dragons, overpowering them, and then gaining access to the riches hidden in the dragon's cave! The epic hero Beowulf is just one example of someone who tried to fight a dragon guarding treasures – Beowulf succumbed to the fight and was killed. The defining characteristic of a Western dragon symbol is that it represents the epitome of "power".
As guardian and ruler over the 4 elements of fire, water, air, and earth, the dragon is the expression of natural forces. Its power should not be directed against its human soulmate, but rather help them to reorder/sort and overcome inner turmoil and chaos. It is said to give its soulmate energy and drive, as well as courage to keep going – even when it often seems hopeless.
