Danish smoked salt is made exclusively from Dead Sea salt.
This type of salt is cold-smoked for 160 hours at a constant temperature of 30 degrees - during which the salt must be turned by hand every half hour.
This is how the salt gets its beautiful brown color - only at exactly the right temperature.
If smoking occurs at too high a temperature, the salt becomes cloudy and grey.
If the salt is smoked too quickly or at too high a temperature, it turns almost black.

Only about 5% of all smoked salts are actually smoked. Most smoked salts are simply infused with smoke flavorings.
