Claus Krämer - The Whole Truth About Witches and Their Sorcery / Book
Belief, delusion, persecution
Claus Krämer
The whole truth about witches and their magic.
Understanding of witchcraft and witch hunts in the Middle Ages
While in most ancient cultures women and men with special spiritual, clairvoyant, and healing abilities played important social roles and were highly honored, in the Middle Ages people feared witches and sorcerers. This led to exclusion and persecution, which reached their tragic peak in the early modern period when countless innocent people fell victim to the Inquisition.
Based on the latest historical findings, this book illuminates the diverse causes and excesses of this delusion. At the same time, the author also brings us closer to those whose actions could have made them suspect. He tells the stories of herbalists and wise women, midwives and healers. For it was almost always women who fulfilled important medical, nursing, and psychological functions, often putting themselves in danger in the process.
Numerous images from different eras illustrate the written text and bring the Middle Ages, with its fascinating, inspiring, and also frightening diversity, back to life before our eyes.
