The Celtic primeval goddess Cailleach, she is a storm and winter witch.
She can appear as a young girl, but can also transform into a veiled old woman.
Life and death are often closely intertwined. She killed plants, but guarded their seeds for new life. Through the witch Cailleach, we can understand that death is not final, but also stands for the beginning of new life.
She brings us the wind, storms, snow and ice. Her face and being embody death, and at the same time, new life slumbers within her.
In some myths, Cailleach is associated with the trinities, like the three Norns at the Urdbrunn of the world ash tree Yggdrasil.
In old myths, she plucks down or goose feathers and lets them fall as snow on the earth. She rewards hard-working people, despises and punishes lazy people.
She is accompanied by a wolf, on which she also rides through the air, bringing snow and ice to strike down all life. Frost spreads across the ground into every last crack when she touches it with her magic wand.
She is particularly terrifying for people who fear death. All who understand the cycle of life and are at peace with themselves and life do not fear Cailleach, but regard her as a "friend," because death belongs to life and stands for a new beginning.
