Man-rune / life rune, growing upwards - the part that we can symbolically describe as the above-ground part of the world tree.
It depicts man in his power, growing beyond himself, unfolding / striving upwards.
The Man rune is also called the Algiz rune or Elhaz. It is a protective and defensive rune associated with the totem animal / elk.
The Algiz rune also symbolizes the (elk) antlers, and thus stands for defense.
Inverted, it represents the Yr rune, growing downwards - the part that we can symbolically describe as the underground part of the World Tree.
Going into the earth, grounding, returning to oneself (rooting, remembrance of tradition) - this is what this rune represents; The Yr path, the feminine / inner world, manifestation, the material world / matter.
It is wrong to simply view the Yr rune in a negative sense as a symbol of death, thus as the death rune.
The Yr rune is to be considered an EQUAL rune alongside the Man rune.
Together, or superimposed, they symbolize the Hagal rune - the mother of all runes, which stands for wholeness, harmony and perfection of the universe as well as that which permeates everything.
The Hagal rune also symbolizes the world tree: the roots that go deep into the earth into the "Ur", as well as the trunk and the branches that grow upwards.
Woman and man complement/unite to form the universe and bring new life.

Interpreting the Yr rune as a death rune, using it as a so-called peace symbol, or even misusing it is anything but appropriate.
If we find the Man rune (life rune) on gravestones, it stands for birth and growth.
The Yr rune stands for "withdrawing into one's inner self" and does not automatically symbolize death, because after earthly death there is a new beginning in Valhalla, or however we want to call the "otherworld".
