Pendant "Odin on Sleipnir", 925 silver

He is the high god of the Aesir, the highest and first deity, god of poetry, knowledge, magic, the sky, war, and the dead. As a storm god, he is the leader of Wotan's army.

Odin, the finder of the runes, god of runic wisdom and patron god of the skalds.

Odin, the Allfather, son of Burr and the giantess Bestla. Together with his brothers Hönir and Lodur, Odin created the first human couple, Askr and Embla, and gave them souls. He sits on his throne Hlidskjalf in the hall Valaskjalf in the gods' fortress Asgard and can observe the entire world from there. He is all-seeing, perceiving what is said and done. At Odin's side are the ravens Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory), who return each morning from their journey to bring him news from the world. He is also accompanied by the two wolves Geri (Greedy) and Freki (Gravenous). With his eight-legged steed Sleipnir, he rides against the forces of darkness!
Odin pledges his eye to his uncle Mimir in exchange for the right to drink the mead Odrörir from the Well of Truth. He owes his wealth to his golden ring Draupnir, from which eight more rings drip every nine days. In battle, he relies on the spear Gungnir, which never misses its mark.
Odin's mythical wife is Frigg, whose Old High German name Frija is identical to the Norse name of the Vanir goddess Freyja. Frigg is also identified with Freyja in the Edda. His wife bore him the sons Thor, Baldr, and Tyr.
Thus, Odin is not only the god of the fallen in Valhalla, but also the leader of the dead in general, as expressed in the older myth of the Wild Hunt, in which all the spirits of the dead ride through the night under Odin's leadership.
His retinue consists of 13 spirit warriors, the Valkyries (Valkyrjar), and the souls of the fallen warriors, the Einherjar, who reside in Valhalla (Hall of the Slain).
This gleaming hall stood in Gladsheim, before it the grove of Glasir, whose trees bore golden leaves. Above the main door of the hall, which was so high that its gable was barely visible, hung a wolf as a symbol of war, and above it an eagle. The hall itself, covered with shields over spear shafts, had 540 doors, through each of which 800 Einherjar march when the great battle with the Fenris wolf begins (The Warriors Gather for Ragnarök). It was intended for these brave warriors, who came to Odin after their death on the battlefield. Under Odin's presidency, the Valkyries poured mead liberally.

The motif can be found on the Tjängvide picture stone from Gotland in Sweden. It depicts, among other things, Odin on his eight-legged horse Sleipnir.
The stone is inscribed with the younger 16th Futhark (Norwegian-Swedish runic alphabet) with the inscription "raisti stain in ift iurulf bruþur sin"!

The depicted ship of the dead, possibly with Valkyries standing on it, carries the deceased to Valhalla.
The guardian of the Gjöll River (River of Death) is Modgudr; she stands on the Gjallarbrú bridge of the underworld, which leads to the realm of the dead, Hel.
The name Modgudr is composed of the Old Norse noun “mord” (ecstasy / rage / enthusiasm) and the syllable gud (god).
Modgudr is thus a goddess of ecstasy, just as Odin is the god of the dead and of ecstasy. The ferryman on the river could also be Odin, as a companion on the journey to the afterlife.

Many picture stones convey fragments about the religious history of Norse mythology. It will certainly take decades of scholarly work, if it is even possible, to gain a clear picture of everything.

This pendant, “Odin on Sleipnir,” is a detail from a picture stone, and it is up to us to bring this religion back to life within us.
  • This beautifully crafted pendant is made of 925 sterling silver.
  • Size: 18 x 18 mm.
  • Weight approx. 1.5g.
