This crystal salt was formed by the drying up of a primeval sea more than 22 million years ago. Origin: The Salt Range is located in the Punjab province of northern Pakistan, 200-300 kilometers south of the Himalayas. This vast salt deposit, situated 400-600 meters below ground level, belongs to the southwestern foothills of the Himalayas. The Salt Range was formed by the active thrusting of sedimentary sequences in the Himalayan foreland. Geologically, the Salt Range is therefore part of the growing Himalayan mountain system. The Himalayas themselves were formed during the Tertiary period by continental drift.
