The sea god Njörd gave his name to this sea buckthorn liqueur. Njörd was the husband of the winter goddess Skadi. Together they had the children Freya and Freyr.
The marriage to Skadi failed because they couldn't live in the same place. They had previously agreed that Njörd would spend nine nights with Skadi in Thrymheim, and Skadi would spend three nights with Njörd by the sea. But Skadi couldn't sleep because of the seagulls' cries in Nóatún, and Njörd couldn't bear the howling of the wolves.
