The Celtic primordial goddess Cailleach is a storm and winter witch.
She can appear as a young girl, but she can also transform into a veiled old woman.
Life and death are often closely intertwined. She killed plants, but protected their seeds for new life. Through the witch Cailleach, we can understand that death is not necessarily final, but also represents the beginning of new life.
She brings us the wind, the storms, snow, and ice. Her face and her being embody death, and yet new life slumbers within her.
In some myths, Cailleach is associated with the trinities of the three Norns at the Well of Urd of the world tree Yggdrasil.
In ancient myths, she plucks down or goose feathers and lets them fall to earth as snow. She rewards those who work hard and diligently, and despises and punishes the lazy.
Accompanying her is a wolf, which she also rides through the air, bringing snow and ice with her to crush all life. Frost spreads to every last crevice on the ground when she touches it with her magic wand.
She is especially frightening to those who fear death. All who understand the cycle of life and are at peace with themselves and life do not fear Cailleach, but rather regard her as a "friend," for death is part of life and represents new beginnings.
